During a battle, the only way you get to know what's happening is to check out the battle logs. It shows what you and your opponent has done and the outcome (ie, health points lost, chakra/stamina points used, sometimes even details of the attack).
If you searched for a fight in the "Battle Arena", battle logs pop up as soon as you entered a command. In case someone challenged you to a battle however, things go from boring to downright absurd.
Boring: You are fighting in real time. After you picked an action, you have to wait for your opponent to make a move. To make sure waiting does not consist of forever, a time limit is implemented. Once the time limit has passed and no action has been picked, his/her turn is forfeited and you get to attack again. As far as I know, no damage is inflicted nor acquired. (Bummer, I know).
Absurd: Sample scenario. You were challenged by someone who, though belongs to the same rank as yours, is stronger, faster, and has more powerful jutsu builds than yours.
In that case, this happens.
"riknata uses her katana and deals 0 damage.
kamesan stood around and did nothing."
Pfft. Do they really have to slap it in my face?
